On the basis of the literature on attitudes to post-editing (see 1.6.4 Translators’ attitude to post-editing), it was also assumed that certain requirements of post-editing pose challenges to students and may be perceived as hampering the process. Difficulties with deciding whether the MT output is acceptable, struggling to break away from the version offered by the MT, and feeling demotivated because of menial work were included in the questions (see Appendix 8, question 17). The three options students could choose from were: “did not considerably hinder my work” (3), it hindered my work (2), it considerably hindered my work (1), and the hypothesised mean was 2 (it hindered my work). Once again, a series of one-sample t-tests was carried out to find out whether students’ responses were significantly different from the expected mean.

For two questions, that is, for deciding whether the MT output is acceptable and for struggling to break away from the solution of the MT, the observed group means did not differ significantly from the hypothetical mean (decision-making: M = 2, SD = 0.74, t(11) = 0, p = 1; struggle to break away: M = 1.92, SD = 0.79, t(11) = –0.364, p = .723). In other words, students felt that it was indeed difficult to decide whether the MT output was correct and to escape the wording of the MT, and this difficulty hampered their work, but not too much. Interestingly, students indicated that the lack of creativity, which is often implied as a characteristic of PE, did not hinder their work at all. In statistical terms, there was a significant difference between the expected mean (M = 2) and the observed mean, M = 2.75, SD = 0.45, t(11) = 5.745, p < .001.
