3.1.9 Translation performance and time on task

An intriguing research question is whether time on task has any relation to performance. To assess the relationship between time on task and translation/post-editing performance, Pearson product-moment correlations were calculated between the variables in both the PE and the HT conditions. The results suggested that the time taken to produce the target text is not related to the quality of the text, and this is independent of whether the TT was prepared by traditional (from-scratch) translation or by post-editing. Error types showed no significant correlation to time on task either (Table 16).

Correlation analysis was performed for time on task and translation subcompetencies, too. In the HT group, no significant correlations could be identified, whereas in the PE group, use of English test scores showed a significant, moderate, positive correlation with time on task (Pearson r = .576, p = .05).
