6.3 Communicating Effectively with AI Tools

While AI tools can generate responses quickly, the quality of their output depends heavily on how questions or instructions, often referred to as prompts, are formulated. Learning to communicate effectively with AI is therefore an important academic skill.
In academic contexts, effective prompting involves clarity, specificity, and critical intent. Rather than asking AI to produce finished answers, students are encouraged to use prompts that support explanation, comparison, structuring, or reflection. For example, prompts that ask AI to explain a concept, identify strengths and weaknesses, or suggest alternative perspectives can support understanding without replacing independent thinking.
 
Practical Prompting Guidelines for Academic Use:
  • Ask for explanations, not answers
  • Request comparisons or contrasts rather than conclusions
  • Use AI to structure ideas, not generate final text
  • Follow up with critical questions that challenge the output
 
Reflective Activity
Use the same academic question with two different prompts: one vague and one specific. Compare the outputs and reflect on how the quality, depth, and usefulness of the responses differ.
