Mastering Academic Competencies

A Guide to Effective Learning and Success

8.1 What is Critical Thinking?

Critical thinking is the process of actively analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating information gathered from observation, experience, or communication. It involves questioning assumptions, recognizing biases, examining evidence, and assessing conclusions (Paul & Elder, 2006). Critical thinkers are characterized by their ability to think clearly and rationally, make reasoned judgments, and solve problems effectively.
In higher education, critical thinking is considered a core academic competency that underpins effective learning across disciplines. It enables students to engage meaningfully with complex ideas, evaluate competing arguments, and move beyond surface-level understanding. As academic demands increase, the ability to think critically becomes essential not only for assessment success but also for independent and lifelong learning.
Critical thinking is not about being critical of others; it is about understanding and improving one’s own thought processes. It requires openness to new ideas, a willingness to challenge one’s own beliefs, and the ability to consider multiple perspectives (Brookfield, 2017). By cultivating critical thinking, individuals can improve their decision-making, enhance their problem-solving abilities, and develop a deeper understanding of complex issues.
