Mastering Academic Competencies

A Guide to Effective Learning and Success

8.2 Steps to Develop Critical Thinking Skills

Developing critical thinking skills is a gradual process that requires conscious effort and practice. The steps outlined below should be viewed as interrelated and iterative rather than linear, supporting the ongoing refinement of thinking skills over time. Here are some steps to help enhance these skills:

1. Ask Questions:
  • Begin by questioning the information presented to you. Ask who, what, where, when, why, and how. This helps in understanding the context and uncovering deeper meanings (Elder & Paul, 2010).

2. Gather Information:
  • Collect relevant information from multiple sources. Evaluate the credibility of these sources and look for evidence that supports or refutes the information (Facione, 2011).

3. Analyze and Interpret:
  • Break down complex information into smaller parts. Look for patterns, relationships, and inconsistencies. This helps in understanding the underlying structure of the information (Browne & Keeley, 2018).

4. Evaluate Evidence:
  • Assess the quality and relevance of the evidence. Consider the reliability and validity of the data and the logic of the arguments presented (Ennis, 2011).

5. Consider Alternatives:
  • Explore different perspectives and alternative explanations. This broadens your understanding and helps in considering all possible solutions (Halpern, 2014).

6. Decisions:
  • Based on your analysis and evaluation, make informed decisions. Be aware of the implications and consequences of your decisions (Kurfiss, 1988).

7. Reflect:
  • Reflect on your thinking process. Consider what worked well and what could be improved. This helps in continuously refining your critical thinking skills (Schön, 1983).

Together, these steps support a disciplined yet flexible approach to thinking that encourages questioning, evidence-based reasoning, and reflective judgement.
