Mastering Academic Competencies

A Guide to Effective Learning and Success

14.4 Reflective Writing Exercises and Examples

Reflective writing exercises help learners articulate their thoughts and insights, enhancing their reflective practice. Here are some exercises and examples to guide you:

1. The Reflective Cycle:
  • Use Gibbs' Reflective Cycle (1988) to guide your reflections. This cycle includes six stages:
    1. Description: What happened?
    2. Feelings: What were you thinking and feeling?
    3. Evaluation: What was good and bad about the experience?
    4. Analysis: What sense can you make of the situation?
    5. Conclusion: What else could you have done?
    6. Action Plan: If it arose again, what would you do? (Gibbs, 1988).
Example:
  • Description: Today, I participated in a group project on renewable energy.
  • Feelings: I felt anxious about presenting but excited to share our findings.
  • Evaluation: The presentation went well, but I stumbled over some points.
  • Analysis: My preparation was adequate, but my nerves affected my performance.
  • Conclusion: I could have practiced more to build confidence.
  • Action Plan: Next time, I will rehearse in front of a friend to get feedback and reduce anxiety.

2. Critical Incident Analysis:
  • Reflect on a significant event that impacted your learning. Describe the incident, analyze why it was significant, and consider how it will influence your future actions (Tripp, 1993).
Example:
  • A critical incident during a clinical placement taught me the importance of clear communication. I misinterpreted a patient's symptoms due to ambiguous notes. Moving forward, I will ensure thorough and precise documentation.

3. Learning from Mistakes:
  • Reflect on a mistake you made, analyze what went wrong, and identify steps to prevent it in the future. This exercise helps in developing resilience and a growth mindset (Dweck, 2006). Reflecting on mistakes in a constructive way supports resilience and helps reduce fear of failure in academic contexts.
Example:
  • During an exam, I misread a question and provided an incorrect answer. Reflecting on this, I realized the importance of carefully reading questions. In the future, I will allocate time to thoroughly read and understand each question before answering.

4. Peer Feedback Reflection:
  • After receiving feedback from peers, reflect on the insights gained and how you can apply them to improve your work. Consider both positive feedback and constructive criticism (Topping, 1998). Peer feedback reflection also supports the development of evaluative judgement, a key skill in academic and professional contexts.
Example:
  • Peer feedback on my research paper highlighted the need for clearer argumentation. Reflecting on this, I plan to improve my thesis statement and ensure each paragraph supports my main argument.

Reflective models such as Gibbs’ cycle are guides rather than templates and should be applied flexibly to suit different learning contexts. Over time, reflective practice enables learners to take increasing ownership of their learning and development.
