Szokott és szokatlan fordítási jelenségek

1 Introduction

Ever since translation became the subject of scholarly inquiry, there has been no shortage of attempts to categorise the distinct modes of language mediation based on a wide range of criteria (Floros 2005). Following in the footsteps of Snell-Hornby (1988: 35), this paper argues that both translation and interpreting are prototype concepts in the sense first used by Rosch (1973). This approach admits “blends and blurred edges,” and posits that “phenomena are situated and focussed” against “a spectrum or cline” (Snell-Hornby 1988). The terms and definitions cited below derive from Laver & Mason (2018), mostly adjusted for the present purposes.

The typology proposed here covers translation and interpreting along the dimensions of typical and atypical, from four perspectives: the translator and the interpreter, the source text (ST), the target text (TT), and target text function. Throughout this study, typical means a prototype as defined by Rosch: the central member of a conceptual category. Accordingly, atypical is anything that is least often associated with a class. The difference between typical and atypical is often a matter of perspective, varies from culture to culture, and is prone to change over time. The following claims reflect the present author’s experience, global impressions, and mostly non-systematic observations. As such, they will have to be confirmed or disproved by further research.

A kötet tizennégy fordítástudományi tanulmányt vonultat föl, négy részben. Az első rész a fordítás és egyetem alcímet viseli, három tanulmánya a fordítás és oktatás témakörét járja körbe két kísérlet és egy utánkövetés formájában. A második rész három fordítástudományi elemzést tartalmaz, melyek közül kettő a műfordítók helyzetét vizsgálja, a harmadik pedig magát a fordítástudomány tárgyát osztályozza. A harmadik rész konkrét műfordításokra összpontosít és három esettanulmányt sorakoztat föl: a példák egy olasz történelmi regény angol, német és magyar fordításai, illetve a kanadai-magyar műfordítási áramlatból, valamint egy hazai irodalmi együttműködésből származnak. A negyedik rész öt, kiemelkedő jelentőségű, eredetileg angolul írt fordítástudományi munka magyar fordítását tartalmazza, amelyeket a Pázmány Péter Katolikus Egyetem fordító és tolmács mesterszakos hallgatói, illetve fordítástudományi kutatásokat végző doktoranduszai készítettek.
