Fluid Mechanics Measurements

Pressure-based measurement of velocity magnitude and direction

Probes serving for measuring velocity magnitude and flow direction are generally termed "direction metering probes". In addition to the benefit of determination of flow direction, such probes can be adjusted for accurate total pressure measurements with minimised alignment errors. The measurement also provides information on the dynamic pressure, i.e. the magnitude of the velocity. As the difference between total and dynamic pressure, the local static pressure can also be deduced. Such probes are especially used in industrial R&D. They must be equipped with an angular positioning system enabling directional alignment.

This lecture note aims at providing basic information on nowadays applied fluid flow measurement techniques, in terms of their operating principle, layouts, application areas, advantages, and limitations. As such, it intends to give an aid in decision-making when selecting instrumentation for the solution of various practical flow measurement problems, also providing hints for the actual realisation of the measurements.
