Anxiety, Coping, and Flow

Empirical studies in interactional perspective

Discussion and Conclusions

As stated earlier this study is an exploratory one; thus, the results should be regarded as being primarily illustrative. Two circumstances make it particularly important to stress this point again. First, the situation descriptions that were analyzed in the present study were obtained from youngsters in schools in Budapest. We do not know how the physical and cultural environment (for example, urban or rural) in which individuals grow up and live influence the type of situations and Expected Consequences that are experienced as anxiety provoking. In a certain environment some situations may not be reported as anxiety provoking simply because they are so rare or do not exist at all. Therefore, we do not know how far it is possible to generalize the sex and age differences reported here to persons living in other environments in the same society or to persons in other societies. One important task for further research is to investigate the extent to which reports of situational threat are dependent upon cultural and physical characteristics of the environment. For example, are the proportions of different types of Expected Consequences the same across ages in different environments, but evoked by different types of Activating Conditions?
