Toward an Understanding of Pre-Service English Teachers’ Motivation: The Case of Hungary

Series editors’ foreword

We are happy to present the sixth volume of our series entitled Applied linguistics in the 21st century. We are really happy to publish our second monograph in English, as we hope it will help the internationalization and wider recognition of research results from Hungarian contexts. Dávid Smid’s monograph is the first that analyses English teacher education in Hungary, which is a timely and acutely important topic. The general importance of this research is that Hungarians are still lagging behind in second language knowledge in the European Union, and, therefore, we should not let any stones unturned when investigating reasons behind this sad phenomenon. Mapping pre-service teachers’ motivational profiles informs us about a number of issues, such as who decides to study English language teaching, what the possible reasons might be behind attrition during studies or shortly afterwards, as well as how teacher motivation might be linked to student motivation. Dávid’s work also provides a good example of mixed-methods studies and how to solve complex design-related problems. We think that this monograph will be interesting to researchers, stakeholders and, hopefully, decision-makers.

In this monograph, the findings of a mixed-methods, multi-perspective empirical study targeting the motivation of Hungarian pre-service English teachers are presented and discussed. When it comes to the Hungarian context, the importance of the topic is indicated by issues, such as the ongoing workforce shortage in the public education sector and the latest reforming of the initial teacher education system. The present investigation sheds light on the complexity of Hungarian pre-service English teachers’ motivation, which was found to be a bipartite construct interrelated with cognitive, emotional, and social processes. It also offers insights into the motivating capacity of the undivided pre-service English teacher education program as well as the extent to which the initial teacher education system is effective with respect to its student recruitment policy. As such, this monograph might be beneficial to researchers, university instructors, mentor teachers, and educational policymakers alike.
