3.1.4 Translation/post-editing time

Time taken to produce the target text is very often seen as a key factor because it indicates both economic efficiency and cognitive effort (or the lack of it). Obviously, it is in the best interest of the customers, the agencies and the translators alike to work as fast as possible. In consequence, differences between translation time and post-editing time are of considerable interest.

Our data show that the mean translation time for human translators (n = 15) was 46.27 min (SD = 13.00), and it was 41.03 min (SD = 13.02) for the post-editors (n = 15). Nevertheless, the independent samples t-test showed that the difference between the two groups was not significant (t(28) = 1.09, p = .28).

As there were language proficiency differences, albeit not significant, between B English and C English students, the question arose whether the time taken to complete the tasks was different for these two groups. Independent samples t-tests showed no significant differences either in the HT (B English (n = 6): M = 45.22 min, SD = 9.53; C English (n= 9): M = 46.94, SD = 15.43, t(13) = –0.24, p = .817) or in the PE condition (B English (n = 6): M = 38.54, SD = 9.27; C English (n = 9): M =42.69, SD = 15.61, t(13) = –0.58, p = .57). Nevertheless, there is a tendency for C English students to work somewhat slower than B English students.
