Fluid Mechanics Measurements

Coriolis flowmeters

In many industrial applications, not the volume flow rate but directly the mass flow rate – and, by its integration with respect to time, the mass – of liquids is of preliminary interest. For example, in pharmaceutical or chemical industry, the mass of reagents directly takes a substantial role in chemical reactions. In order to satisfy such need, the Coriolis flow metering technique has been developed, being uniquely capable of measuring the fluid mass flow rate directly. The technique is capable of measuring the liquid density as well. Therefore, the densities and mass flow rates of various liquids – e.g. various solvents distributed toward a number of chemical reactors from a central reservoir plant – can be consecutively measured with the same Coriolis flowmeter inserted in the distribution system.

This lecture note aims at providing basic information on nowadays applied fluid flow measurement techniques, in terms of their operating principle, layouts, application areas, advantages, and limitations. As such, it intends to give an aid in decision-making when selecting instrumentation for the solution of various practical flow measurement problems, also providing hints for the actual realisation of the measurements.
