The analysis of the respondents’ comments on their speech samples yielded the following recurring themes: comments regarding fluency (33%), comments regarding the way students sounded and perceived their speech (27%), comments regarding suprasegmentals and pronunciation (19%), grammar (12%) and vocabulary (9%). Regarding the first question, namely whether they liked how they sounded, the comments show that listening to one’s own speech is not necessarily a pleasant experience for 49% of the participants, who reacted negatively to their own sample. They did not always clarify whether it is the sound of their voice they are dissatisfied with or specifically how they sound in English. Words like harsh, frustrating, horrible, and annoying express strong dissatisfaction in the comments. Other words refer to the emotion they hear in their recording, such as nervous, embarrassed/embarrassing, and terrified. A smaller number of students (25.5%) merely expressed that listening to themselves is strange, and even if they were satisfied, they still mentioned that there was room for improvement. Few were completely satisfied or positively surprised (25.5%). The answers to the remaining two questions regarding what students liked and disliked about their speech will be discussed in detail in the next section.
