ESP is still not a clearly understood domain by the stakeholders at Tartous University. Thus, such a study will be the first conducted at Tartous University in the ESP domain and also the first of its kind in conducting needs analysis for medical students in Tartous based on the importance of English in general and ESP in particular. In light of what Basturkmen (2006) illustrated that “ESP is understood to be about preparing learners to use English within academic, professional, or workplace environments, and a key feature of ESP course design is that the syllabus is based on an analysis of the needs of the students”, conducting this study will achieve the primary step upon which the subsequent procedures will be built. In addition, this area of research in ESP has not been given proper attention, and little is known about the needs of medical students and why the English language is becoming necessary for them. Farhat (2012), in her research, showed that English in the Syrian context is now integrated with the identity of medical students. Thus, this study contributes to the EMP research in the Syrian context since it confirms the importance of EMP, which cannot be detached from the lives of medical doctors or students.
