Transient cases

All the phenomena detailed so far (pressurised hydraulic modelling, open channel flows, description of compressible fluids and modelling of heating systems) have been investigated in a steady-state condition. This chapter provides a brief insight into why the initial conditions and transient operating states must be addressed. Transient cases are, for example, the start/stop of a pump or the sudden closing of a gate valve in HS. These can happen intentionally (due to operation) or due to an unexpected event (power failure, malfunction). Several literature sources provide further information, such as [1], [25], [26].

This university textbook is the joint work of the colleagues of the Department of Hydrodynamic Systems, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. Its main aim is to help students deepen their knowledge of the subject Fluid Flow Systems. It also provides a brief historical overview and a basic introduction to fluid mechanics. It discusses each chapter in varying degrees of detail based on the course material. At the end of each chapter, check questions guide students in their learning.
