Fluid Flow Systems

Protection against water hammer

High-pressure shockwaves or surges (whose magnitude can be the multiples of the base pressure in the system) can run through the system and lead to mechanical damage or pipe bursts. Moreover, if we consider the depression wave following a sudden closure, negative overpressure can occur in the pipe and “suck in” the seals of pipe joints or even collapse the thin-walled pipeline. The following possibilities are available to protect against problems caused by the water hammer phenomenon.
