The present small scale research attempts to investigate the general reading habits of L2 students in Veszprém, Hungary. The findings suggest that second language learners are constantly connected, sharing, publishing and networking on social media, which has a significant impact on the reading culture and interests of adults and young adults in Hungary.

The findings of the study also reveal that age affects readings habits. Group A reads prints and electronic books and comics more frequently while Group B spends time with print and electronic newspapers and magazines more regularly. As the study does not differentiate between recreational and school/academic reading, and students in Group A (13–30) are within school and university age, it could be implied that the participants are confined to reading due to the exam-oriented teaching approach in educational settings. On the other hand, Group B which is generally away from schools and universities, spends more time on recreational and pleasure reading such as newspapers and magazines for personal and social purposes. Their participants also use social media for different purposes. While Group A is captured by the multimodal world of social media (videos and pictures), Group B usees social media to keep in touch and read texts more frequently.
