The educational methodological functionality of Learning Management Systems

The functionality of LMSs allows you to organise and track your learning material in modules. In LMSs, modules usually contain a part of the curriculum or a specific topic, which students progress through gradually. Thanks to their modular structure, LMSs are easy to manage and personalise, and allow learners to complete each module at their own pace. LMSs usually allow for customisation of the learning materials and module structure, so that trainers can easily design their own learning programmes. LMSs usually allow materials to be uploaded and made available to learners, as well as the possibility to monitor learners' progress and individual assessment (Bradley, 2021, Kraleva et al., 2019, Elias, 2010).

LMS modules offer different functionalities for learners and teachers to support the educational process. Some important features are:

  • Content management modules: content management modules allow teachers to create, edit and share content with learners. This can be a presentation, image, video, document, web page or anything else.
  • Collaboration modules: These modules provide various tools and platforms, such as forums, group chat rooms, shared document editors and project management tools, which allow participants to communicate and collaborate in real time. They help develop critical thinking, problem-solving skills and group dynamics, all of which are important in modern education.
  • Assessment modules: These modules allow teachers to set tests and assignments that learners must complete. The modules offer a range of options, including automatic assessment, deadlines and feedback.
  • Communication modules. This can be through text chat, audio or video conferencing, forums, messages or other forms.

In an LMS, learner activity and learning performance is usually assessed automatically and the data is processed through a significant amount of analysis. In an LMS, assessment can be done in the following ways:

  • Tasks: the instructor can also use manual assessment, i.e. grading the tasks uploaded by the students with scores, and additional textual assessment and feedback. These modules allow teachers to provide feedback on learners' performance and help learners to self-assess.
  • Project-based assignments: online course platforms offer instructors the opportunity to create project-based learning assignments that give students the chance to design their own learning pathways and apply the knowledge they have acquired in real-life projects.
  • Activity tracking. In general, the activity tracking system generates reports on learner activity and performance.
  • Achievement of learning objectives: the learning objectives tracking system in the LMS allows instructors to monitor the extent to which learners achieve the course objectives.
  • Learning pathways analysis: the learning pathways in the LMS allow instructors to design courses that are tailored to learners and that help improve outcomes.
