12.5.2 Types of explicitation shifts in the target language texts

In the analysis, the three most frequent explicitation shifts in the target language texts are identified. All through the three semesters, adding connectives was the most frequent shift (see Table 12.4). As students progressed in their training, the proportion of interpreting-specific explicitation shifts (Gumul, 2006) increased gradually. In semester two, adding connectives was followed by replacing nominalizations with verb phrases, while adding modifiers and quantifiers ranked third. In the TL texts recorded after semester three, adding modifiers and quantifiers ranked second, followed by meaning specification. In the TL texts recorded after semester four, both the second and third most frequent shifts were interpreting-specific, namely inserting discourse-organizing items and meaning specification.
