4.1.3 Entry requirements and aptitude testing

In interpreter training programs, more precisely in initial interpreter training, entry requirements tend to be similar, with slight modifications depending on program level and duration (Pöchhacker, 2022, p. 205). The requirements fall under three broad categories: knowledge, cognitive skills and personality traits (Pöchhacker, 2022, p. 204). Applicants are expected to show and prove their knowledge of languages and general background knowledge, together with the cognitive skills of active analysis, attention and memory, in addition to the personality traits of stress tolerance and intellectual curiosity (Pöchhacker, 2022, p. 204). Conference interpreter training programs expect a high level of language knowledge of their future students.

To test these requirements, a wide range of procedures are being used in conference interpreter training institutions. These include holistic communicative tasks (Pöchhacker, 2022, p. 205), for example interviews, impromptu speech production, or summarizing a text in another language. Even though these procedures have received criticism for not being reliable, other methods, such as written translations or sight translation have their shortcomings as well (Pöchhacker, 2022, p. 205).
