In this section, results related to selected disfluencies (ETDs + restarts and repetitions) are presented (Table 10.6). The frequency of incidence of disfluencies seems to increase as students progress in their training, however, the averages hide considerable individual differences.

Table 10.7 provides a comparison with the extemporaneous and spontaneous speech production of the interpreter trainees. As in the case of ETDs, the frequency of incidence of disfluencies is lower in the extemporaneous and spontaneous output of the interpreter trainees than in their consecutively interpreted Hungarian target language texts, signalling lower cognitive load in the former two conditions. However, when taking disfluencies into consideration, the spontaneous condition had the lowest frequency of occurrence of disfluencies for 100 words, followed by the extemporaneous speech production condition.

As noted earlier, the averages hide considerable individual differences. These are presented in Table 10.8. Again, there are no clearly distinguishable trends. In the case of student Estrella, the frequency of incidence of disfluencies is highest in the consecutively interpreted target text recoded after semester 3, the frequencies in the target texts recorded after semesters 2 and 4 are similar. The lowest frequency of incidence of disfluencies can be observed in her spontaneous speech.

In the case of student Luna, the frequency of incidence of disfluencies is the lowest in the interpreted text recorded after semester 3, and the highest in the recording made after semester 2. Disfluencies in her extemporaneous speech are relatively high, and disfluencies in her spontaneous speech were the least frequent.

In the case of student Matador, the frequency of incidence of disfluencies decreases in the interpreted texts as he progresses in his training, and in his case, the frequency of incidence of disfluencies in his extemporaneous speech is higher than in the interpreted target language texts.

In the case of student Senorita, the frequency of incidence of disfluencies increases in the interpreted target texts as she progresses in her training, and the disfluencies in her extemporaneous and spontaneous speech are almost as high or higher as those in the interpreted target language texts.
