Cohesion has several definitions and approaches in text linguistics (Károly, 2014, p. 55) and even though it is seen as a rather controversial term, most authors consider it as one of the basic aspects of textuality.

De Beaugrande and Dressler list Cohesion as one of the seven standards of textuality, together with Coherence, Intentionality, Acceptability, Informativity, Situationality, and Intertextuality (de Beaugrande & Dressler, 1981). They define cohesion as all grammatical text surface relations, adding that in spoken texts intonation can be seen as a subsidiary cohesive system that gives the text its audible contours (de Beaugrande & Dressler, 1981).

Cohesion is one of the main components of Grabe and Kaplan’s model of text production (Grabe & Kaplan, 1996, quoted in Károly, 2014, pp. 59–60), while Enkvist defines cohesion as “the term for overt [grammatically describable] links on the textual surface” (Enkvist, 1990, p. 14, quoted in Károly, 2014).

Halliday and Hasan also consider cohesion as the basic aspect of text organization, which is achieved by the use of cohesive ties or relations established by grammatical or lexical means (Halliday & Hasan, 1976). These lexical and grammatical features explicitly signal relationships between text parts. Halliday and Hasan include reference, conjunction, substitution and ellipsis among grammatical cohesive devices, while synonymy, hyponymy, repetition and collocation belong under lexical cohesion.
