Hungarian Lexicography III

LSP Lexicography

5.3. Berkáné Danesch Marianne (project leading ed.)–Kovács Terézia (chief editor): Magyar–angol környezetvédelmi értelmező szótár CD-melléklettel [Hungarian–English Explanatory Dictionary of Environmental Protection with CD]. Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, 2005, 438 p.

The dictionary contains 5,500 entries, in Hungarian–English direction. It is basically a specialist Hungarian monolingual dictionary: an entry gives the Hungarian term, the short definitions of its meanings and the English translation of the headword. The Preface emphasizes that the volume serves as supplement to Környezet- és természetvédelmi lexikon [A dictionary of environmental protection and nature conservation] (Láng 2002).
The dictionary is a part of the series of specialized dictionaries published by Akadémiai Kiadó. Its physical appearance is appealing: it is a sewn, hardback, easy-to-handle book. The printing is of excellent quality; the readability is very good. The page numbers are given in the page header with a border; on the two sides, the headword of the given entry is indicated.
No information is given in the Preface or in any other part of the volume about the editing or use of the dictionary. The volume does not contain notes or appendices.
The entries of the Hungarian glossary are arranged in alphabetical order, irrespective of topics. The volume does not contain illustrations (figures, photos, graphics, etc.).
The dictionary does not indicate either the pronunciation or alternative forms of spelling. The entries consist of words, phraseological units of several words and collocations. The rate of units consisting of more than one element is high. The glossary does not contain either example sentences or grammatical information. The volume may be used for the interpretation of Hungarian specialized texts and for their translation into English. Some professional errors and printing mistakes:

Terminology-related mistake:
gombafonalak
A magasabb rendű növényeket
(főleg fásszárúakat) segítő,
gyökereiket behálózó mikroszkopikus
gombasejtek szövevénye
mycorrhiza, fungal hyphae
Description of the mistake: The definition confuses two concepts. The word “gombafonalak” (“fungal hyphae”) refers to a category that is wider than the one denoted by “mikorrhizák” (“mycorrhiza”). “Fungal hyphae” are structures of filamentous fungi that form a network in the substratum; the majority of known fungi have such fungal hyphae (exceptions include, for example, yeasts). Mycorrhiza, on the other hand, is a (symbiotic) connection between the roots of certain (“mycorrhizal”) fungus species and plants. The majority of plants that form mycorrhizas are not woody plants; to our knowledge, more than 90% of these plants are bryophytes and herbaceous plants.

Correctly:
gombafonalak
fungal hyphae

Spelling mistake: biogáz telep
Description of the mistake: Words of six or fewer syllables are spelled as one word, irrespective of the number of words.
Correctly: biogáztelep

Typographic error:
puhafa
sofwood
Description of the mistake: The English equivalent of “puhafa” is “softwood”.
Correctly:
puhafa
softwood

The present volume introduces us in the history of Hungarian mono-, bi-, and multilingual LSP lexicography, its theoretical evolution, outlines its broader and narrower fields of research and the tasks ahead. Moreover, the studies have undertaken to investigate and give an account of the history of lexicography covering various special fields and providing a critical analysis of the dictionaries involved. Last but not least, the new technology extending the concept of LSP lexicography is presented.
