(Dis)fluencies in children’s speech

Discussion and conclusion

Findings of this study shed light on similar and different patterns of use of filled pauses and fillers in 7-, 10-year-olds’ and in young adults’ spontaneous speech. Data confirmed an increase of fillers and a decrease of filled pauses in speech production from 7-year-olds through 10-year-olds up to young adults with different patterns depending on phrasal position. There are five questions raised by the data that need explanations: (i) Why did 7-year-olds prefer using filled pauses against fillers? (ii) Why did 10-year-olds use more filled pauses and fillers in their spontaneous speech than adults? (iii) Why did young adults prefer using fillers instead of filled pauses? (iv) Why did filled pauses and fillers show different patterns depending on phrasal positions? (v) Is there any explanation for the different occurrences of filler instances depending on phrasal position?
