(Dis)fluencies in children’s speech

Conclusion

We proposed a set of quantitative measures for studying speech produced by hearing and hard of hearing children. Most of the measures have proven to be useful, as they were related to age, speech intelligibility, and groups of children (HA, CI, NH). Although there will always be individual differences among the HA and CI children in terms of age, gender, hearing loss degree, and clinical and educational intervention, we were able to observe quite a number of empirical phenomena related to the spoken language performance of CI and HA children using the proposed measures. Our long-term goal is to allocate effective indicators to assist professional, clinical practices. Currently, we are implementing computational modeling of tone contours, aiming to extend this line of research to more linguistically motivated properties. Eventually, we hope that under careful supervision, these automatically derived indicators can be implemented for constructing automatic tools and training programs for child speech assessment.

Disfluencies (filled pauses, filler words, repetitions, part-word repetitions, prolongations, broken words, and revisions) are natural phenomena of everyday speech. They are insights on the speech planning processes indicating speech planning difficulties or self-monitoring, and play an important role in turn-taking during conversations. The occurrences of disfluencies in speech are affected by several factors. One of these is the speaker’s age. This volume is a collection of nine articles on the topic of speech planning and speech production of children from the aspects of fluency, disfluency, speech tempo, and pausing. The volume is recommended to linguists, experts of phonetics and psycholinguistics, speech and language therapists, university students, child language specialists, and everybody who is interested in child language
