Anxiety, Coping, and Flow

Empirical studies in interactional perspective

Introduction

One of the central questions in personality psychology is the cognitive representation of social and physical environment in the mind of the individual. Analyzing the environment–cognitive representation–behavior sequence different concepts, e.g., “cognitive map” (Tolman, 1948), “image” (Miller, Galanter, & Pribram, 1960), “representation” (Aronfreed, 1968), “perceptual scheme” (Piaget, 1969), “expectancy” (Rotter, 1954), “anticipation” (Lazarus, 1966), “construct” (Kelly, 1955) and “situation-outcome contingency” (Bolles, 1972) have been suggested by advocates of different personality theories. In an interactionistic perspective the situation perception and appraisal are an important part of the process in which a person transforms environmental information into behavior. Research on the situational context has been the greatest tradition in connection with anxiety (see Stattin, 1983b, for a review). In their model of situation-anchored anxiety (Magnusson & Stattin, 1981b) the following variables have been stressed as important determinants of anxiousness behavior: a) the type of outcome the situation is expected to bring about, b) the individual’s evaluation of this outcome for his own physical and psychological integrity, and c) the possibility of coping overtly or covertly with the situation.

This volume follows a decade of empirical research on how we can cope with the negative effects of life including our own negative emotions and feelings of incompetence, and how we can mobilize consciously – always remaining in reality – what environmental and inner personal sources to change our stressful world into a place enriching our self and development with optimal experiences.
