Anxiety, Coping, and Flow

Empirical studies in interactional perspective

Introduction

What kind of processes, effects and efforts play role in experiencing our world as a place for frequent joyful and flow and satisfying experiences instead of a threatening place, which evokes negative emotions? This volume follows a decade of empirical research on how we can cope with the negative effects of life including our own negative emotions and feelings of incompetence, and how we can mobilize consciously – always remaining in reality – what environmental and inner personal sources to change our stressful world into a place enriching our self and development with optimal experiences. Speaking the language of psychological variables: the topic of the book is the process rising from anxiety to the creation of flow experience, and the presentation of those factors (control capability, self-consciousness, coping capacity and psychological immune competence), which play central role in that how one judges self, his/her situation and options for action in difficult stressful situations, and how one feels as a consequence of this. Anxiety overwhelms when we see ourselves as incompetent and weak, the situation as threatening, but we can create flow even in apparently dangerous situations, if we align our capacities, sources and the requirements, we trust in our abilities, and interpret the stressful environment as a challenge or problem for solving.
