Anxiety, Coping, and Flow

Empirical studies in interactional perspective

Discussion and Conclusions

Summarizing the results of the present study, it can be said that Dutch adolescent boys and girls at different ages appear to differ as to the perceived qualities of anxiety-provoking situations. Distinct Activating Conditions and Expected Consequences of reported anxiety-situations are differentially related to the sex and age of respondents. There is a clear tendency towards increasing differentiation with age for major Situation-Outcome Contingencies of anxiety experience, both within and between the sexes. Notwithstanding the differences, substantial agreement exists as to the relative importance of Activating Conditions, Expected Consequences and Situation-Outcome Contingencies, both between the sexes and age groups as well as among cultures when comparing results for consistency with findings in Hungary, India, Sweden and Yemen.
