Attila Oláh

Anxiety, Coping, and Flow

Empirical studies in interactional perspective

Method

The subjects were adolescent boys and girls aged 12, 15 and 18 years from Holland, Hungary, India, Sweden and Yemen who attended elementary school, secondary school or a university. Because of the latter, persons of low intellectual capacity are somewhat underrepresented, especially in the older age groups. The sampling for Holland was done by Mook and van der Ploeg, for Hungary by Oláh, for India by Reddy, for Sweden by Magnusson and for Yemen by Kassim. To make subject samples as comparable as possible, all data were collected in big cities: capitals in the case of Hungary, Sweden and Yemen; Hyderabad in the case of India; Leiden and Zoetermeer in the case of Holland. Of the 2,827 subjects participating in the study, 651 were Dutch, 834 Hungarian, 538 Indian, 332 Swedish and 472 Yemenite. The numbers of boys and girls were approximately equal overall as well as by age group. Also, the total numbers of subjects by age group were fairly comparable.

This volume follows a decade of empirical research on how we can cope with the negative effects of life including our own negative emotions and feelings of incompetence, and how we can mobilize consciously – always remaining in reality – what environmental and inner personal sources to change our stressful world into a place enriching our self and development with optimal experiences.
