Anxiety, Coping, and Flow

Empirical studies in interactional perspective

Study 3

The task of predicting individuals’ anxiety reactions in particular situations has commonly been performed with general trait measures, situation-specific trait measures, or averaging of state anxiety measures (Bridges, 1978; Hodges & Felling, 1970; Katkin, 1965; Lamb, 1965; Lamb, 1976; Magnusson, 1980c; Patrick, Zuckerman & Masterson, 1974; Zuckerman, 1978). Characteristically, the predictor data have been based on behavioral reactions referring to the frequency or intensity of the individual’s anxiety reactions rated either globally or in relation to contexts that resemble the criterion situation. Attempts to predict anxiety states from the individual’s appraisal of the situation are less common.
