Anxiety, Coping, and Flow

Empirical studies in interactional perspective

Introduction

Coping with stressful events is a process governed by individual and situational factors in dynamic, bidirectional interaction (Folkman & Lazarus, 1988; Lazarus & Folkman, 1987; Torestad, Magnusson, & Oláh, 1990). Coping has been conceptualized and classified in many ways: vigilant-nonvigilant, repression-sensitization (Averill & Rosenn, 1972; Byrne, 1964; Epstein & Fenz, 1967; Shipley, Butt, Horwitz, & Farbry, 1978), task- (or problem-) centered, emotion-centered (Andersson, 1977; Coyne, Aidwin & Lazarus. 1981), a mixture of psychodynamic defenses and cognitive mastery terms (Pittner & Houston, 1980) or focused on appraisal, problems, or emotions (Billings & Moos, 1984; Moos & Billings, 1982), to mention just a few.
