Anxiety, Coping, and Flow

Empirical studies in interactional perspective

Method

During the present research project on person-situation interactions, stress- and anxiety-provoking situations were systematically investigated among young people from pre- to post-puberty. The basic approach was to ask subjects to generate descriptions of concrete episodes that they considered to be anxiety-provoking. The subjects were from 12 to 18 years of age, and from various cultures (Sweden, Hungary, Yemen, and India). The subjects’ descriptions were first informally content-analyzed and then categorized, using two separate classification systems. These systems were in keeping with social learning theories in that they emphasized expectancy and situation-outcome contingencies. The theoretical basis for the taxonomy can be found in the works of Bolles (1972) and Rotter (1966).

This volume follows a decade of empirical research on how we can cope with the negative effects of life including our own negative emotions and feelings of incompetence, and how we can mobilize consciously – always remaining in reality – what environmental and inner personal sources to change our stressful world into a place enriching our self and development with optimal experiences.
