Anxiety, Coping, and Flow

Empirical studies in interactional perspective

Results

First, preferred coping solutions were studied as a function of variation in certain perceived qualities in the situations. In Figure 1a (boys) and Figure 1b (girls), preferred coping strategies are related to the degree of self-reported anxiety – low, medium or high – provoked by the situations. Constructive solutions decreased and escape strategies increased significantly with growing anxiety provocation for both boys and girls. Passive coping was virtually unrelated to variation in self-reported situational anxiety. The general pattern of behavior was the same for males and females. There were, however, some interesting indications of gender differences. Constructive coping was more often used by boys in relation to all three levels of anxiety provocation whereas escape coping was most predominant for girls in high anxiety situations.

This volume follows a decade of empirical research on how we can cope with the negative effects of life including our own negative emotions and feelings of incompetence, and how we can mobilize consciously – always remaining in reality – what environmental and inner personal sources to change our stressful world into a place enriching our self and development with optimal experiences.
