Anxiety, Coping, and Flow

Empirical studies in interactional perspective

The Effect of Freud’s Anxiety Concept on Later Models

By this detailed discussion of Freud’s anxiety concept rich in original citations our aim was to demonstrate our conviction that it is actually Freud’s ideas which are revolving in the head of nowadays anxiety theorists. We would like to illustrate in this part which thoughts of Freud are the building elements of leading anxiety theories today. In his first article in 1916 he writes about the period of preparation for the danger as the organism’s state which precedes the developing and deepening of anxiety. The organism is enabled for more punctual perception, more effective intervention and more focused mobilization of its forces in this state. The preparation for danger described by Freud can easily be paralleled with the alarm reaction, which is the initial step of Selye’s adaptation syndrome (1956) on the one hand, and the so-called activation theories of emotion, which emphasize the equality of emotional intensity and arousal on the other. Freud cited thought that anxiety can develop from a readiness state, which is characterized by an increased “sensual attention” and vegetative activity, is a forerunner of the ideas of the cognitive emotion theory tied to Schachter and Singer, according to which emotion is an interaction of a neutral excitement or activation and an experiential factor. Because Freud in his Lecture 32. emphasizes that anxiety is evoked by the ego’s former experienced helplessness in those situations, which are judged on the basis of a key moment as identical to a previously experienced situation.
