Anxiety, Coping, and Flow

Empirical studies in interactional perspective

The Concept of Psychological Immune System

One can say that human beings have capacities at biological and psychological levels for surviving and struggling against difficulties in the process of adaptation. The tool of fight and defense at biological level is our biological immune system. At psychological level we also have the potential for fight and for defense. Across the life span, the individual is continuously faced with adjustment and well-being challenges. How a person reacts to these potentially endangering episodes at a given point in time determines how the individual is approached, experienced and handled at a later point. Individuals differ in how they cope with psychological health hazards and these individual differences are associated with general well-being and personal adjustment (Andrews & Withey, 1976; Watson & Clark, 1991; Lazarus 1993; Ryff & Keyes, 1995).
