Phonetic similarity: Gradient scores

When a word is phonetically more similar to its canonical form, the duration is normally longer than that of a word that is less similar to its canonical form, i.e., more reduced. This relationship between phonetic similarity and duration may not always be applicable, but it addresses a specific aspect of the phonetic representation of continuous speech. Figure 5 illustrates the very different interaction patterns by NH, HA and CI children.

Disfluencies (filled pauses, filler words, repetitions, part-word repetitions, prolongations, broken words, and revisions) are natural phenomena of everyday speech. They are insights on the speech planning processes indicating speech planning difficulties or self-monitoring, and play an important role in turn-taking during conversations. The occurrences of disfluencies in speech are affected by several factors. One of these is the speaker’s age.
