Anxiety, Coping, and Flow

Empirical studies in interactional perspective

Results

The results of the frequency distributions for Activating Conditions categories are presented in Table 1. As can be seen in this table (Table 1). Archaic situations (e.g., “being alone at night”) on the average are most frequently associated with anxiety, followed in descending order by “dangerous” people, accidents, supernatural situations (e.g., “a horror movie on TV”), self, parents and evaluative situations (i.e., exams, social evaluation). This generally holds for both boys and girls, except when age levels are considered separately. As to sex differences it can be further observed that girls more often than boys mention their parents, archaic and supernatural situations, while boys more frequently refer to themselves, authorities and accidents in connection with their anxieties. These differences hold for most age levels. Testing raw frequencies by means of χ2, overall sex differences proved significant at the .05 level (χ2 = 25.9, df = 15). Results for the separate age levels were: age 12: χ2 = 17.1 (.30 < p < .50), age 15: χ2 = 34.4 (p < .01), and age 18: χ2 = 36.6 (p < .001). As may be noticed, differentiation between the sexes for Activating Conditions increases with age level.
