Studying the sources of optimal experience we worked out an adequate method to identify the frequencies of flow and antiflow experiences. All the four scales (flow, anxiety, boredom and apathy) of this Flow Inventory can be considered as reliable tools to identify the daily experiences of teenagers in different life situations according to the psychometric analyses. Our results show that Hungarian teenagers get into flow state most often when spending time with friends and school activities create the least opportunity to experience flow. The opposite is the case with anxiety, which predominates in school situation, and apathy and boredom are also more characteristic to school than in family or among friends. Males feel significantly more often that life is boring and there are no meaningful goals independently of the situation. The teenager girls do not report more flow experience, but they live their life less burdened by antiflow experiences than the boys. Our results give unambiguous empirical proof for the fact that the frequency of flow experience and the developmental level of the protective personality dimensions that provide stress tolerance are strongly correlated. The frequency of the optimal experience and the extent of the psychological immunity can be considered mutually strengthening factors along a circular reasoning. As a consequence, we can contribute to the adolescents’ capacity to create a flowful life for themselves by enhancing their positive thinking, sense of coherence, self-efficacy, resourcefulness, problem-solving capacity and self-regulating capacity.
