Gas supply in Hungary: pre- and post-February 2022 dynamics

The supply side of Hungary’s gas market is structured around three core pillars: imported gas, domestically produced gas, and gas stored in underground facilities. Gas is typically injected into these storage sites between April and September and withdrawn during the period from October to March. Although domestic gas production constitutes only a small proportion of Hungary’s overall supply, it serves as a buffer against market shocks. A segment of this production, originating from hydrocarbon fields that were operational before 1998, is procured by MVM Next Energy Trading, the designated universal service provider and a subsidiary of the state-owned energy group MVM, at low, regulated prices (NFM Decree No. 67/2016 (XII. 29.)).
