Dr. Czabán Samu jogpszichológia-kutató tíz éve keresi erre a választ, nemcsak az íróasztal mögött, hanem társadalmi intézményekben, közösségekben, emberek között is. A kötet ezen interdiszciplináris vállalkozás legjobb pillanatait mutatja be. Kitér az igazságszolgáltatás kognitív kihívásaira: hogyan befolyásolja a bírói döntéseket a tanúk és vádlottak megjelenése, a bizonyítékok sorrendje vagy akár az időjárás. Felveti a kérdést, hogy mit jelent a modern neurojog, és valóban felelőssé tehető-e az ember döntéseiért, vagy mindannyian csupán agyunk önkényének vagyunk kiszolgáltatva. Szó esik arról is, miért nem eredményeznek a választások feltétlenül felelős kormányzást, miért mítosz az emberi önzőség, és miért nem bízhatunk meg saját emlékeinkben.

A pszichológia észrevétlenül átírja az emberről alkotott képünket, a társadalom nagy egészétől a személyes életünkig. Mindannyian osztozunk azokban a kognitív torzításokban, amelyek meghatározzák gondolkodásunkat, és amelyekkel, miután napvilágra kerültek, visszaélhet bármely hatalom. A psziché törvényei előtt mindenki egyenlő, így egyéni és társadalmi önvédelmünket is edzenünk kell.
