Magyarországon magyarul ilyen részletességű munka az idegen nyelvek tanításáról még nem jelent meg. A szerző célja az volt, hogy emelje a nyelvpedagógiai tudatosság szintjét mindazokban, akik az idegen nyelvek tanításával foglalkoznak. így könyve alapvető tananyag az idegen nyelvi tanárképzésben és továbbképzésben, vagyis főként az idegen nyelv szakos egyetemi és főiskolai hallgatókhoz, valamint oktatóikhoz szól. Hasonlóképpen alapvető tananyag az alkalmazott nyelvészeti, nyelvpedagógiai, illetve általában a pedagógiai és pszichológiai doktori programok hallgatóinak. A legfontosabb az, hogy az aktív nyelvtanárok kezébe eljusson e könyv. A szűkebb szakmai érdeklődésen túl a könyv nyelvezete és stílusa lehetővé teszi, hogy a széles nagyközönség, főként az idegen nyelveket tanulók, nyelvvizsgázók, fordítással és tolmácsolással foglalkozók, illetve az idegen nyelvek iránt érdeklődők is haszonnal forgathassák, különösen ha szeretnék megérteni azokat a pszichológiai és nyelvi folyamatokat, amelyeknek a sikeressége (vagy sikertelensége) már eddig is formálta nyelvtudásukat. A könyv legfontosabb fejezetei a nyelvi tartalom közvetítésével (a kiejtés, a nyelvtan, a szókincs és a pragmatikai elemek tanításával), illetve az alapkészségek fejlesztésével (hallás utáni értés és beszéd, olvasás és írás) foglalkoznak. A nyelvtanár és a nyelvtanuló személyiségének, a tanítás és tanulás folyamatának külön fejezeteket szentelt a szerző.
